Former South Africa skipper AB De Villiers was left stunned over prices paid for Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins. The two Australian players became the costliest players in the history of IPL. The record was broken twice on Tuesday during the IPL Mini Auction 2024 in Dubai.

Pat Cummins was picked by Sunrisers Hyderabad for INR 20.5 Crores. This made the Australian skipper the first-ever player to be brought in for such a huge amount in the history of the league.

Fellow Australian pacer Mitchell Starc then broke the record by a huge margin just a few hours later. Kolkata Knight Riders paid INR 24.75 Crores for the Australian left-arm seamer to land him for the IPL 2024 season.

AB De Villiers left stunned over inflated prices –

After all the excitement surrounding the IPL Mini Auctions in Dubai, legendary batter AB De Villiers was left stunned. The former South African skipper questioned the logic behind paying huge amounts for Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc.

The 39-year-old made these comments when he was live on his YouTube channel. One viewer who was watching the show asked if Mumbai Indians were the smartest of the lot. The five-time winners had picked Gerald Coetzee and Dilshan Madushanka for lower prices.

AB De Villiers said “I couldn’t agree more. Some smart buys. Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, and other teams do that well in the IPL do well in the auction as well. They make smart buys and not emotional buys. Cummins and Starc, are both incredible players, but really? For that price?

The former South African legend ended by saying “It shows you the demand. There was a demand for fast bowlers in this year’s auction and when the demand goes up, the price goes up”

Interestingly, Mitchell Starc and AB De Villiers shared a dressing for two years at Royal Challengers Bangalore. The left-arm seamer hasn’t played in the league since then despite many teams showing interest. Pat Cummins on the other hand missed the IPL 2023 season to concentrate on his international career.
