India defeated Australia in the final and fifth T20I match in M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru by six runs. They won the series 4-1 against the Aussies. The teams played their second-string squad in the series with most of the senior players who were being part of the ODI World Cup 2023 getting rested. During the match, something weird happened when Australia needed 10 runs to win from the final over of the game. The first ball was a bouncer, and despite Matthew Wade's belief that it was going beyond his head, the umpire did not award Australia a wide.

Hayden was dissatisfied with the umpire's judgment, and after watching replays of the incident, he stated that Wade was correct in feeling offended by the umpire's decision. Fans slammed Australian cricket team opener Matthew Hayden after he made controversial statements during the fifth T20I between India and Australia on Sunday in Bengaluru.

He was standing up on that ball, and it was still over his head: Mathew Hayden

On the last ball of the 19th over, a drive straight down the ground from Nathan Ellis struck umpire, Virender Sharma. After Arshdeep failed to take the catch, the commentators believed the potential of the ball reaching the boundary,  if it did not strike the umpire. The Kangaroos believed that was the turning point of the match as well.

Hayden said during commentary, "You can see why he is upset; that's a wide. Way over his head. It has to be about his position as well. He was standing up on that ball, and it was still over his head. The umpire has done his job for the second time this over. Have a look at this. This time, it's the one in front, not on the square. They are tag-teaming here."

Some Twitter users were not pleased with Hayden's remarks, with one saying, "Didn't particularly enjoy this remark by Matthew Hayden," and another responding, "Pathetic from a commentator! At best it would've been a couple, not that it matters."
