In a recent revelation by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the calamitous collision between two passenger trains on October 29, 2023, resulting in the tragic loss of 14 lives, has been attributed to a startling distraction. According to Vaishnaw, the loco pilot and co-pilot of the Rayagada passenger train were reportedly busy watching a cricket match on their mobile phones.

It diverted their attention from the critical responsibilities at hand. This revelation surfaced during a discussion about the implementation of new safety measures within the Indian Railways. Minister Vaishnaw emphasised the urgency of enhanced safety protocols, particularly in light of the recent tragedy in Andhra Pradesh.

The collision occurred on the Howrah-Chennai line in Kantakapalli, Vizianagaram district, Andhra Pradesh, as the Rayagada Passenger train collided with the Visakhapatnam Palasa train at 7 p.m. While the official report from the Commissioners of Railway Safety (CRS) is still pending.

What says the Railway's investigation?

The initial investigations by railway authorities swiftly pointed to the driver and assistant driver of the Rayagada passenger train as the primary culprits. Their alleged disregard for two defective auto signals and violation of safety protocols were identified as contributing factors to the collision. Tragically, both crew members lost their lives in the aftermath of the incident.

Minister Vaishnaw expressed the government's unwavering commitment to prioritising safety within the railway network. He announced proactive measures to prevent similar lapses in the future, including the deployment of systems capable of detecting distractions and ensuring the undivided attention of trained personnel.

Vaishnaw stated in an interview, "Through meticulous examination of each incident, we ascertain the root cause and devise effective solutions to avert recurrence." The tragedy serves as a poignant reminder of the critical importance of vigilance and adherence to safety measures in the operation of the Indian Railways. However, the final decision against the culprits will be taken after the final investigation report.
