India and New Zealand clashed against each other in the semi-final match of the Under 19 Women’s World Cup 2023 on Friday, January 27. Indian skipper Shafali Verma won the toss and elected to bowl first. The Indian bowlers started really well, dismissing the first Two Kiwi batters on the score of just 5 runs.

Later, Georgia Plimmer and Isabella Gaze joined hands together and tried to control the innings. But Gaze departed after scoring 26 runs. Courtesy of a 3-wicket haul by Parshavi Chopra, India managed to halt New Zealand women to 107/9 in 20 overs. The Kiwis kept losing wickets continuously. India served up one of their finest fielding displays, catching smartly and bowling wicket to wicket.

The dangerous-looking Plimmer was caught at deep square, just as she looked to be dragging her side back into the game. None of the other batters were able to breach the double-digit mark. Chopra was the top wicket-taker with 3 wickets to her name, while Titas Sadhu, Mannat Kashyap, Shafali Verma, and Archana Devi contributed with a wicket each.

Brilliant batting performance by Shweta Sehrawat

Chasing the target, India got off to a great start as openers blasted 33 runs in the first 3.2 overs. But skipper Shafali was dismissed after scoring just 10 runs off 9 balls which included only 1 boundary. On the other hand, Shweta Sehrawat continued her excellent form with the bat and scored 61 runs on 45 deliveries.

Her knock powered India to a win with 34 balls remaining. Soumya Tiwari also contributed with the bat, scoring 22 runs off 26 deliveries. For New Zealand, Anna Browning picked up 2 wickets. India will now wait to see who will emerge as their opponents in Sunday’s final, as Australia and England square off in the second semi-final. After losing to Australia in the Super Six stage, Verma’s charges have bounced back emphatically and will fancy their chances at being the first side to lift the Under-19 Women’s 20-20 World Cup.
