England beat Pakistan by 93 runs

England beat Pakistan by 93 runs in the ODI World Cup 2023 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. The defending champions did not have a good campaign in the competition but ended their tournament on a high note with back-to-back wins in their last two games. Pakistan on the other hand had a practically impossible chance to qualify for the semi-final. Babar Azam's side performed poorly in the mega event as this is the second consecutive time they failed to qualify for the knockouts of the ODI World Cup.

England won the toss and elected to bat first. Three batters Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, and Ben Stokes scored fifties respectively. They posted a total of 337/9. The Men in Green had a tough job to do as they had to chase a target of 338 runs in 6.2 overs which was practically impossible as a reason they have been out of the competition.

Ben Stokes who did not have a good World Cup played two good knocks in the last two games scoring a century against the Netherlands and a fifty against Babar's side. Haris Rauf who had a devastating World Cup was the pick of the bowlers for his side. The pacer created a record of being the first Asian to concede the most runs in a single edition of the tournament.

Batting first the English openers gave them a good start with Malan and Bairstow stitching a partnership of 86 runs for the first wicket. Stokes again showed some brilliant batting display as he played a knock of 84 runs. Bairstow scored 59 runs and Root scored 60 runs. A quick 30 runs off 17 balls by Harry Brook took the total to 337 runs.

In response, Pakistan lost their openers Abdullah Shafique and Fakhar Zaman early as the former was back in the dugout without scoring. They kept on losing wickets since then at regular intervals and never came back in the run-chase. Agha Salman scored the only fifty for the side. In the end, Hari Rauf scored some 35-odd runs but could not take his team through and was bundled out for 244 runs.
