New Zealand beat Sri Lanka by five wickets at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. The Kiwis chased down an easy target of 172 runs under 25 overs and have kept their hopes alive for the semi-final race or might have just edged through as Pakistan had to beat the defending champions England by a huge margin of 287 runs. The Black Caps made one change with Lockie Ferguson coming back to the side.

Batting first the Lankan batters were rattled by the bowling attack of the Kiwis as they struggled to score runs as Trent Boult picked wickets of the top order. Kusal Perera was the highest run scorer for his side as the opener was the only one to hit a half-century. No other batter looked in control.

Rachin Ravindra while chasing broke the record of the great Sachin Tendulkar with the most runs in a single edition of the World Cup under the age of 25. The batter is the highest run scorer in the ODI World Cup and has been in sensational form in the tournament.

Kiwis almost confirms semi-final berth

The Islanders lost wickets at regular intervals. They were struggling at 107/5, at one stage. Perera was firing from one end but was back in the pavilion after scoring 51 runs off 28 balls. Maheesh Theekshana and Dilshan Madushanka scored some vital runs toward the end, stitching a 43-run partnership that helped them score a below-par score of 171 runs. Boult is the pick of the bowler as he picked three wickets along with three other bowlers Lockie Ferguson, Mitchell Santner and Rachin Ravindra picked two wickets each.

In response, the Kiwi openers Devon Conway and Rachin gave them a solid start and built an 86-run partnership for the first wicket giving the innings momentum in the run chase. The former scored 45 runs and the 23-year-old played a knock of 41 runs. Then a quick innings from Daryl Mitchell of 43 runs helped them chase the target in 23.2 overs.
