Sri Lanka beat England by seven wickets at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. Jos Buttler won the toss and chose to bat first. England made three changes to their side, with Liam Livingstone, Chris Woakes, and Moeen Ali made in for Harry Brook, Gus Atkinson, and Reece Topley.

English openers Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow gave them a good start as they made a 45-run stand for the first wicket and as soon as the southpaw returned to the dugout, the defending champions' innings crumbled and they were struggling at 85/5. The middle-order batters did not look in control and wickets kept on falling at regular intervals. They played batter till No.9 but their fortune did not change as they suffered a hattrick of loss for the defending champions.

Lahiru Kumara and Angelo Mathews who were making a comeback to the side picked five wickets in between them. The former picked up three wickets and restricted the English batters to 156 runs. Ben Stokes was the highest run scorer for his side and no other batter looked in good touch.

English batters disappoint again

English openers Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow gave England a fiery start. The former was the first to be dismissed, 28 runs off 35 balls. Joe Root was run out for just three runs and then Bairstow was back to the dugout after scoring 30 runs. Skipper Buttler's poor form in the mega event continued as he was back for just 8 runs. Ben Stokes tried to give some support to the innings but he did not get any support from the non-striker's end and he was eventually back after scoring 43 runs off 73 deliveries.

In response England bowler David Willey gave them a good start as he dismissed Kusal Perera for just 4 runs. They were reduced to 23/2 with skipper Kusal Mendis back scoring 11 runs. But Sadeera Samarawickrama and Pathum Nissanka made sure their team was through in a low-scoring total. Both the batters scored half-centuries. The former scored 65 runs and the latter scored 77 runs. This is a convincing win for the Islanders in just 25.4 overs.
