Two giants of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) faced off in the 12th match of the IPL 2023 in Wankhede, Mumbai, on April 8, Saturday. The five-time champions, having lost their opener of the campaign, register their second loss in as many games as CSK win the match by seven wickets.

Earlier on the night, CSK skipper MS Dhoni won the toss and asked the hosts were asked to bat first. On a batting-friendly Wankhede surface, a lot was expected out of MI batters. However, it was yet another poor performance by the MI batters, consequently falling short of the par score.

MI skipper, who has been short of runs, Rohit Sharma departed for only 21 off 13 balls; while his opening partner Ishan Kishan top-scored for the side with 32 off 21. At one stage, they were languishing at 76 for 5 in the 10th over, and a lot was left on Tim David and Hrithik Shokeen. The middle-order duo did pull the strings, with David scoring 31 off 22 and Shokeen scoring an unbeaten 18 off 13, guiding MI to a total of 157 for 8.

CSK win two on the spin

The pick of the CSK bowlers was Ravindra Jadeja, who finished with figures of three for 20 in four overs. His spin partner Mitchell Santner also shined, bagging two wickets for 28 runs in four overs. Pacer Tushar Deshpande played his hand, claiming two wickets for 31.

CSK, needing a gettable 158-run target, faced an early setback as MI pacer Jason Behrendorff struck in the very first over of the innings to dismiss Devon Conway for a 4-ball duck. From that point, it was all CSK. Veteran batter Ajinkya Rahane, on his return to the playing XI, came in at number three and set the ground ablaze. He scored a half-century within the six-over powerplay, before departing for a spectacular 61 off 27 in the eighth over.

Opener Ruturaj Gaikwad also played a steady 40* off 36 to take CSK over the line in 18.1 overs. And as we have seen so often in the past, MI are slow to come off the blocks, losing two in two. CSK, on the other hand, win two on the spin, after their loss in their opener.
