KL Rahul achieves unique milestone

India beat South Africa by 8 wickets in the 1st ODI at the Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg. The Men in Blue bowlers showed a sensational display of bowling against the hosts and rattled all the batters as they were bundled out for 116 runs. KL Rahul who has been captaining the side in the absence of Rohit Sharma, has asked for rest for the white-ball series and will join the side for the two-match test series.

Rahul has the experience of captaining the side as he did in the Australia series and led the side well. After the win against the Proteas, the wicket-keeper batter has gone past the legendary India captain MS Dhoni in a major captaincy record. He has joined the list of former India captains Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the most consecutive wins by an India captain in ODI cricket.

The Karnataka-born batter has now 10 wins and gone past Dhoni who had won 9 games in a row in the year 2013. Rahul has been sensational with the bat since his return from the injury. He has been solid in the middle-order for the Men in Blue and has shown immense ability to soak the pressure and keep the momentum going. Rohit tops the list with 19 matches unbeaten from 2019-22 then again the 36-year-old is there followed by the former India skipper who has 12 wins in the year 2017.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are doubtful for the T20 World Cup 2024

Kohli and Rohit have been given rest for the white-ball series and the two greats will be joining the side for the two-match test series. The two were the highest and second-highest run-scorers respectively in the ODI World Cup 2023. Rohit led the side to the final of the World Cup after 12 years but they failed to win the trophy for the third time losing to Australia.

There have been speculations since the end of the major event that the two might have just played their last white-ball series and might not be included in the T20 World Cup 2024 as the two were not part of the T20I series against South Africa as well. It will be interesting to watch whether they will be part of the World Cup squad or a new Indian side will be heading to West Indies for the upcoming year.
