In the 10th game of the ongoing Women's Premier League 2024 (WPL), 2023 finalists, Delhi Capitals played against Gujarat Giants. The Orange Army, Giants were yet to win a game after playing three games, having finished last with only three wins. On the other hand, the Capitals, after losing the opening game, won two back-to-back games. Meanwhile, in the game, GG won the toss and elected to bowl first.
Even though they bowl decently, the fielders dropped four catches which led to DC scoring extra runs, despite not being at their best. Despite the likes of Shafali Varma (13) and Alice Capsey (27) playing quick innings, the Blue Brigade didn't get going well enough as they failed to score big. Skipper Meg Lanning (55) scored an important fifty although she was one of the players who was dropped by the opposition fielder.
Meanwhile, with Annabel Sutherland (20), Jess Jonassen (11), and Shikha Pandey (14*) playing cameos, the team reached 163/8. For the Ahmedabad-based team, Meghna Singh took four wickets while Ashleigh Gardner took two. On the other hand, Tanuja Kanwar and Mannat Kashyap took one each.
Lack of partnership hurt Gujaratb Giants
In reply, the Beth Mooney-led side had a poor start as Laura Wolvaardt (0) was cleaned up by Pandey in the second over. The skipper, Mooney failed to get going and was eventually done in by her Aussie teammate, Jonassen. Only Ashleigh Gardner (40) kept the team going momentarily while others failed to live up to the expectations. In the end, the team was restricted to 138/8, losing the game by 25 runs.
With this, the Western India-based team continues to remain winless in the season. Apart from losing the first four games of the season, they finished with two back-to-back losses last year (six overall). Overall, the team has lost six games in the tournament, combining the 2023 edition as well. On the other hand, the 2023 finalists are going well with three wins.
This is how Twitter reacted
#WPL2024 Delhi Capitals once again win while batting first in a chasing ground. And don't even think it was their best batting day, but still more than enough. JJ then delivers with the ball.
