On June 11 at The Oval, India lost the World Test Championship (WTC) 2021-23 final against Australia infuriatingly by a score of 209 runs. The Men in Blue qualified for the WTC final a second time in a row, but they were unable to triumph in any of them. In the 2019–21 season, New Zealand defeated them.

Meanwhile, on June 13, Manchester City won the UEFA Champions League this season, the Premier League heavyweights Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne, including India's top youngster and opener Shubman Gill. The European Champions, who had an exceptional season in which they won the Premier League, the FA Cup, and the UCL in spectacular fashion to complete a treble, posed for photos with the 23-year-old opening player. Gill posted the images on Instagram with the message, "@mancity congratulations on the Treble."

Poor batting display by Gill in the WTC final

Earlier, Gill joined Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma for the historic FA Cup final between Manchester City and Manchester United at Wembley Stadium. Ilkay Gundogan's match-winning brace helped City win the contest 2-1.Β  The young Indian man can be seen in photographs with Erling Haaland and KDB with Binwant Behgal, the marketing director for Puma.Β Β

After a disappointing performance at the most recent World Test Championship, Gill appears to be taking a sabbatical. The opener had a poor performance, scoring 13 (15) and 18 (19) in the two innings, and he received a fine equal to 15% of his match fee for objecting to the third umpire's ruling. After being ruled out caught in the slips by Cameron Green in India's second innings, Gill took to Twitter and Instagram to express his anger with the umpire's decision.

Gill will most likely to be back in action in the upcoming series against West Indies which will be consist of all 3 formats series. Many new faces might also get a chance against the Caribbean side. However, the squad is yet to announce but the series will start from July 12.
