The Indian team are currently hosting Afghanistan for a 3-match T20I. This is Men in Blue's last assignment before the T20 World Cup 2024 which is scheduled in June at the West Indies and the USA. They have already won the series by 2-0 and the third and final match will be a dead rubber on Wednesday. The Indian supporters have been waiting for their major trophy for almost over a decade. With less than five months remaining until the T20 mega event the Men in Blue selectors mostly have finalised their 15-man side for the upcoming tournament.
Thus every player is preparing to give it their all in the next months in an attempt to earn a spot in the squad. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been back in the side for the shortest format of the game. The selectors will have a tough call to make after the Afghan series.
Flexibility will always be an issue but there will always be external factors. In the article, we will be looking at the players who might miss the side in the mega event.
Here are the 5 players who might miss out on T20 World Cup squad
5. Ishan Kishan
Ishan Kishan was rested during the Twenty20 International series against South Africa. Sanju Samson was preferred instead. Kishan's absence and the fierce competition he faces from Jitesh Sharma and Rishabh Pant could make it more difficult for him to make the squad for the T20 World Cup in 2024. The wicket-keeper batter has been in good form but because of his disciplinary issues, he has been out of the side as well. The opener has to compete with Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Shubman Gill to get a chance in the side as they have been in good form in the shortest format of the game.
4. Ruturaj Gaikwad
Ruturaj Gaikwad performed beautifully with the bat in the five-match T20I series against Australia in November-December. In the third T20I, contested at the Barsapara Stadium, he struck an unbeaten 123, his first international century. Despite his outstanding performance, the team management did not include him in the playing XI for the T20I series in South Africa and the Afghan series as well. With Rohit’s return to the squad, it’s unlikely for Gaikwad to get a spot in the 2024 T20 World Cup side.
3. KL Rahul
KL Rahul has made a dream comeback in the side. The wicket-keeper batter has been in sensational form across formats for the side. Rahul's exclusion from the Afghan series indicates that the selectors are not considering him as a potential middle-order option in the shortest format of the game. This leaves his chances of making it to the T20 World Cup squad in doubt.
2. Shreyas Iyer
Shreyas Iyer will be another name that might be dropped from the major event. He has performed well in the T20I series against Australia and South Africa. Despite his consistent performance, the presence of Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav might be The selectors chose to ignore him as they have several names who have looked better than Iyer in the shortest format.
1. Yuzvendra Chahal
Yuzvendra Chahal is India's leading wicket-taker in T20Is and has been a significant member of the squad. However, despite his great record of dismissing 96 batters, he was not chosen for the ongoing series against Afghanistan. Chahal has yet to make an appearance in the T20 World Cup since 2022. The 33-year-old spinner's Indian Premier League (IPL) form will be under scanner by the selectors and in case he fails to deliver then his exclusion is confirmed.
