Gautam Gambhir's blunt take on captaincy roles

Team India is currently in South Africa for an all-format tour. The Men in Blue have announced the sides for all three formats of the game. Rohit Sharma has been given rest for the white-ball series and has not featured after the ODI World Cup 2023 final loss against Australia. There have been speculations that the 36-year-old batter will not be captaining the side in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024.

There has been a question on who will lead the side between both the players Rohit and Hardik Pandya. Pandya has led the side in the absence of the senior teammate on several occasions. Pandya is very injury-prone and cannot be trusted for long-term planning by the Indian Cricket Board. Rohit is right now in the break from the white ball series and will join the side for the two-match Test series.

Gautam Gambhir was asked about who should lead the side in the T20 World Cup 2024, and the former India captain replied in his unique and unconventional way. He believes Rohit should lead the Indian team in the T20 World Cup if he is in good form. The Men in Blue skipper was the second-highest run-scorer in the ODI World Cup 2023 and gave India a fiery start from the top of the order.

He should be leading in the T20 World Cup: Gautam Gambhir

Gautam Gambhir said, "If Rohit Sharma is in good form, he should be leading in the T20 World Cup or if he is not in good form, whoever is not in good form should not be picked for the T20 World Cup. Captaincy is a responsibility. First, you get yourself selected as a player and then you're made captain. A captain should have a permanent position in the playing eleven, and the permanent place depends on the form."

"Age should not be the criteria why a player should be dropped or picked, only form should be the criteria. Retirement is also an individual decision, no one can force him (a player) to retire, selectors have all the right not to pick them but ultimately one cannot take a bat or ball away from a player. Form is the topmost priority."
