The beginning of Pakistan's tour of Australia took a turn for the worse as they incurred a penalty of two World Test Championship points for a sluggish overrate in the initial match of the three-match series in Perth. Additionally, Pakistan players faced a fine of 10 per cent of their match fee for the over-rate violation.

Australia handed Pakistan a comprehensive defeat of 360 runs in the first Test as Shan Masood's team was dismissed for a mere 89 in the final innings while attempting to chase a formidable target of 450. In the Perth Test, Pakistan fell short by 2 overs of the required quota that they needed to bowl within the allotted time.

"The Emirates ICC Elite Panel Match Referee Javagal Srinath imposed the sanctions after Pakistan were found two overs short after taking time allowances into consideration. The charges were levelled by on-field umpires Joel Wilson and Richard Illingworth, third umpire Michael Gough and fourth umpire Donovan Koch and Shan Masood, the Pakistan captain, plead guilty to the offence, accepting the given sanctions," the Apex Cricket Council said.

World Test Championship 2023-25 Standings

After their convincing 2-0 victory over Sri Lanka in 2023, Pakistan, previously leading the World Test Championship points table, dropped to the second position due to their lopsided loss in Perth. Following the defeat, Pakistan's points percentage decreased from 66.67 to 61.11, allowing India to claim the top spot. India initiated their World Test Championship cycle with a 2-0 triumph over the West Indies in July-August.
