Defending Champions Mumbai Indians began their defence of the WPL 2024 with a thrilling win on Friday. The fans at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru witnessed an amazing clash that went down to the wire.

28-year-old Sajana hit the last ball for a six to seal the win for Mumbai Indians as the players rushed to the ground. Mumbai Indians had to score five of the last ball when an unheralded player from Kerala hit the winning runs.

Earlier in the day, Alice Capsey with 75 runs had given Delhi Capitals a great start to the game. Meg Lanning saw her side score an imposing 171 from their 20 overs. In reply, Yastika Bhatia and Harmanpreet Kaur scored half-centuries to put the chase back on track.

Here are the records that were broken or set during the exciting opening night of the WPL 2024 season.

Delhi Capitals post total vs Mumbai Indians in WPL history

Harmanpreet Kaur had won the toss and bowled first and the move seemed to have backfired. Delhi Capitals scored 171/5 from their 20 overs which is the highest score ever against the Mumbai Indians. UP Warriorz held the previous record when they posted 159 runs for the loss of six wickets during the WPL 2023 campaign.

Alice Capsey makes history with the bat –

Delhi Capitals were able to score the imposing 171 thanks to the 75 not out by 19-year-old Alice Capsey.  It is worth noting that Alice Capsey scored the highest individual runs by an English batter in WPL History. The youngster scored her runs from 53 balls with the help of nine fours and three sixes.

Mumbai Indians set a new record with their international flavour –

During the season-opening game of WPL 2024, history was created as far as Mumbai Indians are concerned. The current champions fielded four different players from four different countries as their overseas stars. Hayley Matthews from the West Indies batted at the top. Natalie Brunt from England at number three. Amelia Kerr from New Zealand picked two wickets and scored 24 runs. The final overseas player Shabnim Ismail of South Africa got the wicket of Shafali Varma to give Mumbai Indians a dream start.

Yastika Bhatia creates history –

23-year-old Yastika Bhatia scored 57 runs off 45 balls with 8 fours and two sixes. This score and 55 from Harmanpreet Kaur helped set Mumbai Indians on course for a famous win. Believe it or not! This is the first time a left-handed batter has scored a half-ton in WPL history.

Sajana’s heroic act becomes part of folklore –

Sajana Sajeevan may not be a name many cricket fans know but the 28-year-old made a huge statement on Friday night. Mumbai needed 12 runs to win of the final over with Alice Capsey bowling. The youngster got the wickets of Pooja Vastrakar and Harmanpreet Kaur. Needing 5 to win off the final ball, Sajana came out and hit a six over the bowler’s head. This was the first time any woman had hit a last-ball six to win a T20 Match.
