In the 18th match of the ODI World Cup 2023, Pakistan faced off against Australia. This match held great significance for both teams, as a victory would bring them one step closer to securing a spot in the semi-finals. In the match, Australia thrashed Pakistan by 62 runs. With this win, the Australian team have now jumped into fourth position winning two wins in four matches.
The Pakistan captain, Babar Azam won the toss and chose to field first. The opening duo of David Warner (163) and Mitchell Marsh (121) made a significant impact for Australia, both achieving centuries. Warner's exceptional form led to his 21st ODI century in just 85 balls, while Marsh displayed finesse, taking 100 balls to secure his second ODI hundred. Their partnership compounded the bowling challenges for Pakistan and set a formidable target.
As the match progressed, Australia's strong start firmly positioned them in a commanding position, making it challenging for Pakistan to secure a potential victory. The remarkable 259-run partnership between Warner and Marsh eventually ended in the 34th over when Pakistan's star pacer, Shaheen Afridi, dismissed Marsh. However, outside of this partnership, there was little to cheer about for the Australians as the entire team managed to score just 367 runs in their allotted 50 overs. The star with the ball for Pakistan was Shaheen who registered a bowling figure of 5/54.
Australia thrash Pakistan by 62 runs
In reply to the humongous target, the Pakistan team got onto a brilliant start as both their openers combined for a partnership of 134 runs for the first wicket. Both Abdullah Shafique (64) and Imam-ul-Haq (70) looked fluent in their batting and looked like taking the match away from Australia. But sooner Marcus Stoinis was introduced and he took the first wicket of Shafique. After the dismissal of his opening pair, Imam followed his batting partner back into the hut.
The highlight of this inning was that the top seven batters of the Pakistan batting lineup all got started but not one went on to score big runs. At one stage Pakistan were 268/4 and then they ended up scoring 305 all out, which meant they lost the last six wickets for 37 runs. It is also worth mentioning the contribution of Adam Zampa who ended up with a bowling figure of 4/53. Moreover, David Warner was awarded with Player of the Match award for his brilliant innings of 163 runs.
