After Delhi's unexpected and shocking loss to Puducherry in the current Ranji Trophy 2023-24 match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, it has been revealed that 21-year-old batter Yash Dhull will be replaced as the captain of the team. It is more likely that 27-year-old batter Himmat Singh will take on the baton of leadership from Dhull and will be seen leading the team in the future.
Himmat Singh is set to lead Delhi when they face Jammu and Kashmir in an away game on January 12. Yash Dhull, who captained India's under-19 squad to victory in the 2022 World Cup, took over as Delhi's captain in December 2022. The batter also made a noteworthy century in his debut as captain which caught the eyes of everyone.
The only worthy replacement, Himmat Singh, who is six years older than Yash Dhull also has previous experience of leading the team as the stand-in skipper during the Dhull’s absence. Singh has an impressive batting record, amassing 1174 runs at an average of 39.13. Additionally, he maintained an impressive average of 45.25 in 22 first-class games last season.
We wanted him to do well: DDCA Joint Secretary
Discussing the appointment of Himmat Singh as captain and the removal of Yash Dhull from the leadership role, Rajan Manchanda, the joint secretary of the Delhi Cricket Association (DDCA), expressed the view that despite Dhull's talent, he has been experiencing a prolonged period of poor form. Therefore, the decision was made in the team's best interest. Regarding Delhi’s upcoming Ranji Trophy match against Jammu & Kashmir, it was revealed that Navdeep Saini and Ishant Sharma would not be travelling with the team. Saini was included in the India A squad facing England, while veteran Ishant Sharma would only be available for the team’s home games.
"Yash is a talented player but is out of form. We wanted him to do well as a batter, which is why we have relieved him of captaincy duties. Himmat is our senior player and has done very well for us. He will captain the side," DDCA joint secretary Manchanda was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.
